Time: Woody Allen interviewed about Ingmar Bergman

Given all the talk the past couple days surrounding Ingmar Bergman’s influence on Woody Allen, I’m not surprised in the least to see him interviewed by at least one major news organization. From Time comes this wonderful read, with Allen waxing nostalgic on Bergman as a man, an influence, and, ultimately, a legend. Any fans of Allen or Bergman should go ahead and read this interview, but in case you’re not convinced yet, he’s a small gem from the article:

R.C.: OK. So you think he’s great, and I think he’s great. But to many young people — I mean bright, film-savvy kids — he’s Ingmar Who? What relevance do his films have today?

W.A.: I think his films have eternal relevance, because they deal with the difficulty of personal relationships and lack of communication between people and religious aspirations and mortality, existential themes that will be relevant a thousand years from now. When many of the things that are successful and trendy today will have been long relegated to musty-looking antiques, his stuff will still be great.

R.C.: But not many artists worry about God’s silence these days. In the media the current battle is between militant believers and devout atheists. You get very few tortured agnostics.

W.A.: You’re right. That was his obsession. He was brought up religiously [his father was a Lutheran minister] and it wasn’t simply a question of atheism or not. He longed for the possibility of religious phenomenon. That longing tortured him his whole life. But in the end he was a great entertainer. The Seventh Seal, all those films, they grip you. It’s not like doing homework.

‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ trailer

I’m convinced that Jason Lee has sold his soul to some movie studio. First he signed on for Underdog, voicing the titular role, and now he’s playing Dave in an upcoming Alvin and the Chipmunks film. This trailer starts out promising, but loses its luster a minute in. I fully expect these bad-CGI/live-action cartoon adaptations to go the route of… well, previous bad-CGI/live-action cartoon adaptations. Garfield, anyone? Surely Kevin Smith must have a role for our boy Jason Lee. If you must, here’s the trailer:

EA axing online gaming for 49 titles

Now this can’t be a good move. EA decided that on September 1, they’re shutting down online play for 42 titles (providing for multiple console iterations of the same game), mostly consisting of outdated (2005-6) sports games such as Madden, FIFA, NBA Live, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour. On November 1, Burnout: Revenge, NFS: Most Wanted, NFS: Underground, and NFS: Underground 2 will be going dark. I expect hope to see some backlash over this. EA already makes enough money from selling the same repackaged game with small changes and roster updates each year… and now they’re forcing you to upgrade if you still want the full functionality of your game. I still play some PC games that have been out for many, many years… why the hell should two-year-old games get the axe? Greed, pure and simple. Shame on you, EA. Full list of games after the jump.

FB search error message

Now I doubt this is a major outage or that it is indicative of a major update, but I found Facebook’s error message pretty amusing.

Tablet PC program for electrical engineers

French software company Evodia just launched an application for drawing electrical schematics with Tablet PCs. This video is an extremely impressive example of drawing recognition. The software converts the user’s sketches in real-time into electrical schematic symbols. This really is amazing and I hope to see more programs like this that utilize the Tablet form factor to increase productivity.

Google Maps introduces traffic times

Google Maps traffic times

Google has done it again with another great feature for Google Maps. It’s a simple one that doesn’t need much explanation. As shown above, Google Maps now includes an estimate of driving time based on traffic condition, which changes based on time of day. Kudos to the Google Maps team for this.

Comic-Con poster gallery

First Showing has a gallery of all the posters featured at Comic-Con. Here are a few of my favorite ones:

Sweeney Todd poster

Sweeney Todd (dir. Tim Burton) – It’s no secret to my friends that I’m a huge fan of both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. I’ve loved pretty much everything they’ve done together (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory was somewhat sub-par), and this looks like it will probably crack the top three list of best Burton-Depp collaborations. This is one bad-ass poster.

Watchmen poster

Watchmen (dir. Zack Snyder) – This poster just screams, “We’re going to do the graphic novel justice.” Yeah, I know that’s a pretty lame thing to go around screaming, and your friends would probably laugh at you if you yelled that in public, but this poster can do whatever it wants.

Cloverfield poster

Cloverfield/1-18-08 (dir. Matt Reeves) – The marketing team for this film is working hard to create a sense of mystery around this film, and they’re succeeding. Not much is known about this upcoming monster flick from producer J.J. Abrams (“Lost”), but from the teaser trailer and this poster, it’s sure to be a great ride.

Xbox 360-related announcement on August 8th?

Gamestop email from MS

With all the rumors flying around the intarwebs about a possible Xbox 360 price drop, this just adds fuel to the fire. The crew at Achievement Junkie got ahold of this email sent out to GameStop managers and employees. I especially like the mix of “please” and then “DO NOT” all authoritative-like. It’s a good that they asked nicely.

So… imminent price drop, or something bigger?

Chat live with Roger Ebert tonight at 8pm EST

Tonight, Roger Ebert will be hosting a live chat on the new At The Movies archive site. Ebert will be hosting this to launch the new archive to the world. If I get a chance, I’ll definitely be joining in to try and get a chance to pick his mind, and you should too.
