Infamous Steve Ballmer video remixed into an iPod-style Zune ad

From the eternally-hilarious Fake Steve Jobs comes a link to this video, which features the infamous Steve Ballmer freakout video turned into a Zune ad in the style of the iPod ads. Even though the original Steve Ballmer video is close to being overplayed, this still had me laughing.

Kevin Smith pwns heckler at Comic-Con

I told myself I wouldn’t use the word “pwn” when I started this, but there really is no other word that better describes Kevin Smith’s response to someone heckling him at Comic-Con. I won’t post his response, since it is NSFW, but go ahead and watch to see how Smith responds to, “Do you ever plan on making an original movie without rehashing your old characters that doesn’t suck?” And no, he doesn’t attack the run-on nature of the sentence, though there is something in there about the heckler’s mom. Now once again, Not Safe For Work.

“The Items We Carry” – Flickr pool

Items we carry - Vince Brown

How does this qualify as nerdy? Well, just take a look and see all the tech gadget people are carrying! The theme of the pool is pictures of the items that you carry with you every day, and some of the pictures remind me of high school when I carried all my worldly possessions in the various pockets of my cargo pants.

From the belly of the beast: ‘Lair’ delayed

This is straight from Sony over at their Playstation Blog, so it’s the real deal. Ryan Hamlyn, Associate Producer SCEA, stated:

“Due to an extra step in QA testing to enhance the community features in the game, the release of LAIR, originally set for August 14th, has changed to September 4, 2007. Natural challenges that arose while finalizing the offline game to include key online features – such as leaderboards and medal systems – have led to the difficult choice of pushing back the release date. We appreciate everyone’s excitement and patience for the game and look forward to its release on September 4.”

Siskel & Ebert, Ebert & Roeper free official archive

Roger Ebert just announced that, starting August 2, an archive of over 5,000 movie reviews and clips (including clips from movies) from the Siskel & Ebert and Ebert & Roeper will be available online in a searchable database for free. This is a fantastic move, especially if sites like Netflix or Blockbuster can link specific reviews to their movie. Hmm… do I want to rent “Diner”? Let’s see what Siskel and Ebert thought of it. I know come tomorrow I’ll be spending some quality time watching old reviews of movies I love and hate to see what they had to say about them.

Rumor: Apple to announce Tablet next week

Jeremy over at Live Digitally has laid out his rationale for the possibility of an Apple Tablet debut next week at their press conference. He thinks “it’ll be a 12.1″ display and be the width of the iPhone, have no keyboard at all, USB, FireWire, BlueTooth, WiFi and possibly built-in AT&T Edge access.” Now by width I’m guessing he means the thickness of the iPhone, which would be pretty great if they could achieve that. Now this is all wild speculation right now, but Apple usually has something juicy when they schedule these random press conferences. Keep your eyes and ears open next week for an update.

Using OneNote to read archive academic journals

Archiving articles with OneNote

While this how-to article is geared towards archiving academic journals for later review, this method can really be used for any online article reading. In this article, Jeff over at Missionary Geek explains how to take articles and put them into OneNote in a well-organized manner for annotation and archiving purposes. I think I might use this for those long Mac vs. PC rants I find on the Internet that I just can’t finish in one sitting.

Bloggers see “racism” in RE5 trailer

A blogger Two bloggers today have expressed outrage at the blatant racism displayed in the trailer for the upcoming Resident Evil 5. It just so happens that this Resident Evil game takes place in Africa. Nevermind the fact that previous Resident Evil games have taken place in America and a Spanish-speaking village. This means we’ve already had whites and Spaniards killed… doesn’t this just qualify as affirmative action?

First up, a blogger on Black Looks:

“The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white man’s job is to destroy them and save humanity. This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults.”

First of all, yes they’re “supposed to be zombies.” This is the equalizing factor. It’s not about race, it’s not about social status. They’re trying to eat our brains! If they would have replaced the village with white people but still have it take place in Africa, you’d be ranting about the erroneous depiction of the African homeland. If RE6 takes place in Korea, will they be at fault for having… I don’t know… Koreans?

And I’m sorry, but in no way is this game “marketed to children.” That’s just a lazy argument.

Black Looks led me to this next article, which admittedly has a hilarious title: “Blackface Goes HD?”

All I have to say about this article is a response to the following quote:

“After all, in RE4, you spend the game shooting equally out-of-their-mind Spaniards. But, then, the Spanish haven’t been so egregiously misrepresented as blacks through the ages, have they? Not even close.”

Right there, the writer admits that the zombies are no more or less “out of their mind” than the Spaniards from RE4. However, simply because Blacks have been misrepresented more in the media (oh come on.. like every Spanish-speaker isn’t portrayed as a dirty, jobless, burrito-eating Mexican?), that means that this is offensive, however RE4 is not. This argument makes no sense and completely falls apart upon any investigation.

These two bloggers need to sit back and chill a bit. This victim complex has gotten out of control.

‘Watchmen’ details, poster emerge

Watchmen poster

One of the most anticipated movies now in production is Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, based on the legendary graphic novel by Alan Moore. After Snyder’s surprise hit with 300, another comic book adaptation, all eyes have been focused on this decidedly more ambitious effort. Anyway, new details have merged, as has a poster (above).

We now have a partial cast: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson.

Also, an official site, which contains the synopsis:

A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the “Doomsday Clock” — which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union — is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion — a ragtag group of retired superheroes only one of whom has true powers — Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity … but who is watching the watchmen?

Expect this film out in March 2009.

Sony’s CFO spins poor PS3 sales figures

So you’re losing money on every console you sell and your sales numbers are in the toilet… quick, what do you do?  If you’re Sony’s CFO, Nobuyuki Oneda, you explain that lower sales mean lower losses. Yes, he’s actually happy they’re not selling well. He went on to say that, despite the  Wii outselling the PS3 by almost five times, that the critical moment for the PS3 will be Christmas 2008. I think that the critical time for a console is somewhere before the 2-year mark, so let’s hope they have a plan for bringing up PS3 sales and making it more attractive before then. Sony seems to be into the PS3 for the long run, though, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new Nintendo console out before the PS3 has had its run.

But of course, that just means more money for Nintendo.
